BJP MP Dilip Ghosh’s remarks against Mamata Banerjee are the subject of controversy: Apology issued and FIR registered

A First Information Report (FIR) was filed in Durgapur, West Bengal, against BJP MP Dilip Ghosh for disparaging statements he made against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Ghosh apologized for his comments immediately after the Election Commission sent him a show-cause notice, requesting that he reply by March 29. This move occurred after his apology.

The video that went viral on social media had Ghosh making fun of Mamata Banerjee’s family history, which sparked the issue. Ghosh purportedly questioned Mamata Banerjee’s allegiance to several states in his comments, citing her remarks from Goa and Tripura.

‘Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye’, the Trinamool Congress’s election slogan for the Bengal Assembly in 2021, was mentioned in relation to these comments (Bengal wants its own daughter). After receiving a complaint from the Trinamool Congress, the Election Commission said that Ghosh’s remarks were derogatory, disrespectful, and in breach of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

Ghosh was reminded by the Election Commission of the MCC’s rule limiting criticism of rival political parties to their platforms, policies, history, and output.

The BJP later asked Ghosh for an explanation, and he apologized for his comments. He stressed that he had no personal hatred against the chief minister and accepted that his party and the public had qualms about the terms he used. In defense of his remarks, Ghosh said that they were a reaction to Banerjee’s political rhetoric, which he said was intended to “confuse” the audience.
