Giving compliments is a method to express gratitude. Compliments may brighten our day, regardless of how we act, look, or present ourselves. We feel better and more attractive when we hear comments from the people we care about. But sometimes, we could find it difficult to accept praises. “Many people struggle with accepting compliments; often, feeling a surge of anxiety, it’s commonly reflexive to reject the compliment or give a compliment back to shift attention or shut down,” Emily H. Sanders, a psychotherapist, stated. Here are some explanations for why we could find it awkward to receive praise.

Being praised might seem strange to our minds and bodies since we were raised in dysfunctional households where we are used to constant criticism. Because we are not accustomed to the complement, we could find it challenging to comprehend and accept it in a healthy way.

We often have extremely high standards for ourselves and never live up to them. We have very high expectations for ourselves. We also get the impression from this that we are never good enough. Therefore, we feel unprepared to accept accolades from others when they come from ourselves.

We tend to feel tiny in the face of attention, whether it is for reasons of safety or people-pleasing. As a result, we find it difficult to accept compliments because we dislike the attention they bring with them.

We worry that receiving praise will make us more self-satisfied, which will make us become self-centered people. This belief has been ingrained in us via culture, religion, and a variety of familiar messages. We do attempt to decline praises.
