Meet the Indian, not as wealthy as Mukesh Ambani, Adani, or Tata, who purchased a Rs 4000 crore home while walking down the street

One Indian millionaire, however, stands out for converting a run-down London structure into an opulent hotel. Named Sanjay Hinduja, the millionaire decided on the spur of the moment to buy the dilapidated building across from Downing Street after stumbling across it while out for a walk. Though not as well-known as other Indian billionaires like Ratan Tata, Gautam Adani, or Mukesh Ambani, Hinduja has created a lot of buzz with his unusual real estate endeavor.

When Hinduja purchased the Old War Office from the British government in 2015, it made headlines. With an initial contribution of Rs 3,973 crore and subsequent commitments of Rs 9,000 crore over the following eight years, the Hinduja family put a staggering Rs 13,000 crore (1.3 billion pounds) into the project. Their intention was to turn the old structure into a luxurious hotel with contemporary features, a la Raffles London at The OWO. The grand project sought to leave a lasting legacy of classic grandeur in addition to bringing the building back to its previous splendor.

The eight-year transition was not without its difficulties, but in 2023 the project was ultimately finished. The hotel, which is now called Raffles London at The OWO, has 120 guest rooms and suites, 85 condominiums, cutting-edge dining options that Chef Mauro Colagreco has hand-picked, a big ballroom, a private spa, and several exquisite bars. This accomplishment symbolizes the prosperity of the Hinduja family as well as a major addition to London’s allure as a travel destination.

Co-chairman GP Hinduja said with pride when the hotel was finished, “This iconic building has been converted into peace and solace, not World Wars.” It is the heritage of London as a fantastic travel destination as well as the Hinduja Group.
