The famous Gaylord restaurant in Churchgate, Mumbai, reopens with a fresh new appearance, a revised menu, and live music every night

While time machines remain a pipe dream, Mumbai offers something that might fulfill all of your time-travel fantasies. The name Gaylord is self-explanatory and is about to embark on a new phase of its illustrious history.

The legendary 67-year-old restaurant is ready to embrace the modern world and the times with a refreshed aesthetic that will appeal to both the younger generation and the audience of yesteryear. Along with an intriguing new cuisine that upholds its tradition, the all-new Gaylord will continue to showcase its cultural and historical aesthetic.

Founded in 1956 by partners Ghai & Lamba, this famous restaurant is situated on the busy Churchgate Street. The heritage was carried on by Sunil Lamba and is now being upheld by its new owners, Dhruv & Divij Lamba.

Combining the names of the two partners, “Ghai” and “Lamba,” “Gaylord,” which has been a landmark and a connection to Mumbai’s illustrious past for decades, is now prepared to transport you to bygone eras via nostalgic food and ambiance.

The black and white colonial period combined with rich historical accents serves as inspiration for the new interiors created by Delhi-based design studio Headlights Studio. You’ll want to freeze time with the opulent outdoor patio inspired by Paris, the colonial architecture, the retro vibe, the cozy setting, the exquisitely carved historical artifacts and sculptures, the exquisite chandeliers, and the soft seating. More than 150 original black-and-white photos, collected from well-known photographers like Madan Mahatta and others, cover the walls, each telling a unique tale.

The Blueprint 12 gallery, located in Delhi, is the curator of all of these images. A tribute to Gaylord’s rich history and timeless appeal, you may also recognize some well-known names among these photographers: Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Pandit Ravi Shankar, and even some rock stars like the Beatles.

“Redesigning this legendary restaurant’s environment felt like a dream come true. It was a well-balanced dance that paid tribute to its rich past while adding a modern twist. To create an atmosphere that not only captivates the senses but also pays tribute to the restaurant’s lasting tradition while embracing the spirit of modernity, every piece and detail has been painstakingly chosen and constructed. According to Headlights Studio’s design principle, Sidharth Srivastava.

Throughout Mumbai’s Jazz Age, the elegant fine-dining venue introduced formal ballroom dancing and live bands. In the 1960s, it became the preferred social gathering place for numerous Bollywood celebrities. Gaylord has been an essential part of the city’s cultural fabric and continues this tradition.

The renovated Gaylord venue will offer a variety of cultural events, such as live concerts, intimate piano recitals, and hi-tea parties with special guest selections. It is a true gathering place for individuals of all ages. Customers may delight in the freshly selected meals, as well as their old favorites from a range of cuisines, while taking in the cozy atmosphere. New tasty treats with the same signature excellent flavor are also available.

Start your day with a nutritious and delicious breakfast with “Sahib Full English,” which consists of eggs served with sausage, bacon, baked beans, and toast. It’s well-known for its delicious morning bits and Indian and continental food. Enjoy their “Tier Specialty High-Tea platters,” which are noteworthy and include a variety of pantry sandwiches, bite-sized cakes, pakoras, and hot and cold drinks, during your leisurely afternoons. The selection of teas on offer will make you forget you’re drinking coffee. Try the Darjeeling First Flush or Kashmiri Kahwa, and don’t forget to sample the rare Flowery Nilgiri Orange Pekoe, which is only made in the Nilgiri region during the winter harvest. Everything is served on crockery and cutlery imported from France that has been specially chosen.

Savor traditional dishes such as the renowned mashed potatoes from the Gaylord, the ever-favorite Chicken ala Kiev, which is a stuffed chicken breast with cheese and buttered mushrooms, or the delicately prepared Lobster Thermidor, which is baked in a shell and topped with cheese.

For those who like a sweeter vegetarian dish, choose Lasooni Palak, which is a creamy spinach preparation flavored with spices and fresh garlic, or Veg Au Gratin, which is a blend of vegetables in cream sauce baked with cheese. “We can’t wait for your patrons to try the new dishes and choose their favorites,” says Chef Vikram of the newly revamped menu. “Crafting each dish at Gaylord is like composing a symphony, blending tradition with innovation to create a culinary masterpiece that resonates with the legacy of our iconic restaurant.”

Enjoy these delicacies with flavorful concoctions from the recently designed cocktail menu, which features inventive takes on popular local and foreign beverages with a distinctive take on colonial favorites like martinis, bloody marys, and GnTs. Choose your poison from The Royal Mysore, a flavorful concoction of smoked bourbon, sandalwood, cherry, citrus, and Indian bitters, or our award-winning GnT “Gaylord Cucumber Collins,” which is prepared with gin, cucumber, lemon, and sparkling water. The desserts are to die for; try the Japanese Cheesecake and Mixed Fruit Cake, or go for the traditional Black Forest and Pineapple Cake. You won’t be disappointed.

“The redesigned Gaylord hotel and food pay homage to the establishment’s 67-year history, rather than merely celebrating it. Every year, we pledge to continue pushing the envelope and protect our priceless history. According to Gaylord’s proprietors, Dhruv and Divij Lamba, “Gaylord is dedicated to standing the test of time, being a haven for generations and forging new everlasting memories, synonymous with warmth and love for good food.”
