World Book Day 2024: What’s Causing Us to Read Less Books

A growing number of educators, writers, and readers are concerned about the global drop in book reading as we commemorate World Book Day. We investigate how changes in technology, lifestyle, education, and economic issues are affecting our reading habits in an effort to unravel the intricate web of causes underlying this reduction.

The advent of digital media is one of the main causes of the fall in book reading. The proportion of Americans who read books on digital devices has been rising over the last few years, according to 2019 Pew Research Center research, while the number of people who read physical books has decreased. There is evidence of a similar pattern in other regions of the globe, such as Europe and Asia, in addition to the United States.

The advent of mobile internet has brought about a significant shift in purchasing patterns in India. As to a Nielsen India poll from 2021, there has been a notable surge in the amount of time spent on smartphones, mostly on social media and streaming services, rather than reading books.
