Case of Murder of Former Congress MLA from Arunachal Transferred To Anti-Terror Agency

Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh’s former Congress MLA Yumsen Matey’s murder case has seen a significant step as it has been sent to the National Investigation Agency.
The state government received a recommendation from the state police requesting that the matter be sent to the anti-terror agency.

“The State Government has made the critical move of handing the matter over to the (NIA) in an effort to guarantee a careful and comprehensive investigation. The government released a press statement saying, “The Home Department of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh has already forwarded the case to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, through a letter dated December 21, 2023, seeking the necessary directions for the NIA’s intervention.”

Last week, the former Congress MLA in the Tirap region of Arunachal Pradesh was slain while attending a social function. Police reported that he was shot dead while on a visit to the hamlet of Raho, which is close to the Myanmar border.

Senior Tirap police officer Rahul Gupta stated that the former lawmaker and his three companions were in the hamlet when someone approached them and led them to a nearby forest. He said that Matey was instantly killed by a gunshot in the jungle. The assailant then made off for Myanmar.

The assailants’ possible affiliation with the terrorist organization NSCN-KYA is speculated, despite the authorities refusing to reveal their identities. The attacker is being sought for by the police.
Matey was chosen as a Congress Member of Legislative for the 56th Khonsa West Assembly Constituency in 2009. He was in charge of the Departments of Women and Social Welfare, Social Justice, and Tribal Affairs while serving as Parliamentary Secretary.
In addition to joining the BJP in 2015, he announced earlier this year that he will run in the 2024 assembly elections.
