Conspiracy To Embarrass Government: Video Of Naked Women Being Paraded In Manipur Before Parliament Session

The broadcast of the Manipur nude parade video just before the start of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is “prima facie” a plot to discredit the Narendra Modi administration.

Shah made his remark as the Center handed the Central Bureau of probe (CBI) control of the incident probe.

A video of nude tribal women in Manipur being paraded and touched by a crowd circulated last week. The event happened on May 4, one day after ethnic conflict erupted between Meitei and tribal tribes in the state. A political uproar and widespread indignation were caused by the video. In addition to requesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a remark about the situation in the state, the opposition has been pressuring the Centre to allow a debate on Manipur in the Parliament.

The Centre has also moved the Supreme Court to move the trial away of the state of Manipur in addition to transferring the inquiry at the government of Manipur’s request. This is for the interest of impartiality, according to Shah.

According to the Hindustan Times (HT), Shah informed the media that the individual who recorded the incident’s video on May 4 has been detained, and that the camera that recorded it has also been found.

According to HT, “Home Minister Amit Shah said that the videographer of the viral video involving helpless Kuki women has been arrested and the mobile from which he had taken the shots has been seized to unearth what at first glance appears to be a conspiracy to embarrass the Modi government on the eve of Monsoon session of Parliament.”

Shah said that six cases involving ethnic violence in Manipur have been sent to the CBI, and certain investigations have also been given to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

“The CBI has already received six cases, and the seventh is on the way. “We want the trials in these cases to take place outside the state of Manipur for the sake of impartiality,” Shah stated. According to HT, three further cases have been sent to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Since May 3, when a Tribal Solidarity March was organized in the state in opposition to the proposed scheduled tribal (ST) classification for the Meitei population, Manipur has been plagued by ethnic violence. Since then, there have been around 150 fatalities and a few thousand displaced individuals.

The Opposition has persisted in demanding that Modi make a statement despite the Centre repeatedly stating that it is prepared for a debate on Manipur in the Parliament and that Shah would react to the topic. The Opposition has criticized Modi for his lack of response to the violence that has broken out in Manipur since it started. Modi’s first remarks on the situation in Manipur came only after the video of tribal women being paraded in their undies aired and sparked uproar throughout the country. The event, he claimed, “will put any civilized society to shame,” and he labeled it “shameful.”

According to Shah, who was quoted by the HT, neither security forces nor the government were present at the scene when the video first surfaced.

Shah made it clear that neither he nor the intelligence community were aware of the May 4 video, and he promised to take the toughest possible action against those responsible and those named in the 6,065 FIRs that the state police had filed. According to him, neither the army nor the police were there when the May 4 video was taken, according to HT.

Shah said that the Opposition was not interested in having a debate on Manipur in Congress.

“The minister said he had no choice but to engage the public through the media as the Opposition was not interested in any debate in Parliament,” the HT stated. He said that since the trains arrived in Manipur months before they were expected to, the cost of food, gasoline, and other necessities had decreased and was now on level with Delhi.
