Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal withdraws his Supreme Court appeal against his detention

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), withdrew his appeal against his detention by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from the Supreme Court on Friday.

Kejriwal’s attorney said that he will appeal the trial court’s decision to remand the case and then return to the supreme court with a new petition.

In front of a bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, senior attorney Abhishek Singhvi, who was representing Kejriwal, brought up the issue and requested permission to withdraw the plea because the top court hearing and the trial court’s remand proceedings would conflict later in the day.

In connection with a money laundering case involving the Delhi government’s now-canceled excise policy 2021–22, Kejriwal was detained by the ED on Thursday night.

“That’s where you can go (before trial court).” Just send the registry an email. We’ll see,” Singhvi was informed by Justice Khanna.

“I will write a letter to the registry,” said Singhvi. For the convenience of your lordships, I felt compelled to bring this up once again before this court.

The action was taken only hours after Singhvi was informed by Justice Khanna that a three-judge panel would hear Kejriwal’s appeal against his arrest throughout the day.

Late on Thursday, Kejriwal filed a motion with the Supreme Court.

After the Delhi High Court denied him protection from any coercive action by the federal agency, he was taken into custody a few hours later.

The charge files that the ED filed include many references to Kejriwal.

According to the CBI, the accused had contact with Kejriwal while he was creating the excise policy, which gave them excessive advantages in exchange for bribing the AAP.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, was removed from his home after being detained by the Enforcement Directorate late on March 21.

In the meanwhile, AAP leaders held a demonstration against the BJP over Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s detention by the Enforcement Directorate in the excise policy case, while Delhi Cabinet members Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj were placed under custody.

As demonstrators at the ITO crossroads, which is close to the AAP and BJP offices, were requested to evacuate due to prohibitory orders under section 144 issued in the area, authorities placed the two ministers in a police bus.

“I was peacefully demonstrating at ITO when Delhi Police arrested me. These individuals first falsely detained Delhi’s chief minister, and they are now also detaining protestors who are nonviolent. What else could be the cause of democracy’s demise if not this? On X, Atishi made a post.

After Kejriwal’s incarceration on Thursday night, the AAP issued a countrywide protest call against the BJP.
