Despite opposition, Meghalaya studies railway project options

The gorgeous Khasi-Jaintia Hills area is being actively considered for the construction of railway lines, according to Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya Sniawbhalang Dhar.

Dhar, who also serves as the department’s director of transportation, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to studying the railroad project. He “We don’t think the notion is ridiculous. We are still doing our investigation, he emphasized.

The 22-kilometer Tetelia-Byrnihat tracks and the 108-kilometer Byrnihat-Shillong line, two major planned railway projects in the Khasi Hills area, have run into significant obstacles due to opposition from a variety of individuals, including powerful pressure groups.

Due to these challenges, the government of Meghalaya shifted its attention to determining the viability of railway connection in the East Jaintia Hills District. The public, however, has also shown opposition to this change.

Dhar emphasized that the state administration has not made up its mind whether to continue these railway projects or not. “This is because we need to first involve all stakeholders, and only then will we be able to make a decision,” he said.

Dhar said it is the government’s duty to spread knowledge of the crucial role railroads may play in the state’s development after realizing that resistance to such revolutionary projects is not rare. The deputy commissioners often undertake awareness campaigns to this goal.

Dhar said, “We will keep the lines of communication with stakeholders open. We will have to put the project on hold if they continue to reject it.

The government’s dedication to encouraging inclusiveness and cooperation in decision-making, while taking into consideration the concerns and interests of all parties concerned, is highlighted by this statement.
