Distraught Family Members of Mizoram Bridge Collapse Victims: Can’t Believe They’re No Longer

Many of the relatives of the West Bengal’s Malda employees who perished when a railway bridge that was being built in Mizoram collapsed have found it difficult to accept that their loved ones are no longer with them. On Wednesday, a bridge that was being built close to Aizawl collapsed, killing 22 employees and wounding three more. Search efforts are being conducted to find one missing worker.

We just cannot accept this… Our lives are in ruins. Our future is now utterly unpredictable… Mahidur Rahaman stated, “We ask the administration to assist us by providing jobs and necessary compensation.” Six members of Rahaman’s family, according to Rahaman, traveled to Mizoram seeking employment around 40 days ago.

According to a senior official, the most of the casualties are from the Malda district’s Pukuria, English Bazar, and Manikchak. Hasina Khaty claims she can’t stop staring at a photo her husband Saidur Rahaman sent the morning of the tragic day while working as a laborer on the railway bridge project.

My husband had begged me not to contact him the day before the event because of work demands, so our two girls asked him to send a picture instead. We shall always remember the photo he gave us on Wednesday morning with the bridge in the backdrop, a crying Hasina added. Many others said that their only want is to spend one last moment with their loved ones.

We want the state government to make sure that the remains of our cherished family members are returned in a respectful manner. Sultan Ali, who lost his brother in the event, claimed that this was the least we could do. According to the Railways, the tragedy was caused by a gantry that collapsed as it was being released onto the still-under-construction bridge over the Kurung River. There were 26 employees present when the event occurred.

The corpses will be delivered to their hometowns in separate ambulances, according to arrangements established by the North East Frontier Railway (NFR). Divisional Railway Manager (Malda) Vikash Chaube informed reporters that senior railway officials would be there when the ambulances arrive at the houses of the deceased’s family members. A high-level committee made up of four people has been established by the Ministry of Railways to investigate the reason of the collapse. Within a month of its inception, the panel must provide its report. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has provided an ex gratia of Rs 50,000 for the wounded and Rs 2 lakh for the deceased’s nearest of kin.

The family of the employees will get a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh, while those who sustained minor injuries would receive an ex gratia of Rs. 50,000 from the railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
