DMK Councillor Among Suspects as NIA Raids Various Suspected IS Training Centers in Tamil Nadu

On Saturday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at over 20 places in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and Coimbatore, that are thought to be connected to anti-national activities. The locations are believed to be training facilities for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the area.

21 sites in Coimbatore, 3 in Chennai, 5 in Hyderabad/Cyberabad, and 1 in Tenkasi are apparently the targets of the raids.

One of individuals on the anti-terror agency’s radar, according to PTI, was a Coimbatore councillor from the state-ruling party DMK.

Images released by the news agency ANI show NIA agents and Tamil Nadu police searching one of the places.

This occurs only a few days after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) apprehended one suspect during multi-state searches in the course of one of its anti-terror operations in relation to a case involving a Jharkhand-based ISIS terror cell.

The searches were carried out in response to the July arrest of Faizan Ansari, a student at Aligarh Muslim University who had come into touch with radicalized people while staying nearby the college, according to a federal agency official.

Rahul Sen alias “Omar” alias “Omar Bahadur” was detained as a result of searches that were carried out on suspects’ homes in nine different locations across six states, according to the official.

“A host of incriminating material, including electronic/digital devices (laptops, pen drives, mobile phones), one knife, a veil, and several ISIS-related documents were seized,” the spokeswoman stated.
