Election Commission directs CBDT to review Chandrasekhar’s “mismatch” affidavit

NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, the Election Commission ordered the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to confirm any discrepancies in the affidavit information provided by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a BJP candidate from Thiruvananthapuram and Union minister.

According to sources, the EC wrote to CBDT in response to a complaint from Congress, which claimed that there were differences between Chandrashekhar’s reported assets and the affidavit he submitted with his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections.

In accordance with usual practice, EC forwards all complaints to CBDT for investigation and, if necessary, action regarding discrepancies in affidavit facts. Section 125A of the Representation of the People Act 1951 addresses any inconsistency or fabrication of an affidavit, according to their statement.
The legislation states that withholding any material from nomination papers or affidavits may result in a fine, a period of jail that can last up to six months, or both.
