Election Commission moves forward the vote totals for the elections in Sikkim and Arunachal to June 2 by two days

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission moved the assembly election vote counting in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim from June 4 to June 2 on Sunday, stating that the decision was made to align the results with the two states’ legislative legislatures’ June 2 term expiration.

Elections to the Lok Sabha and assembly are scheduled to take place simultaneously in the two northeastern states. On April 19, voting will take place in both states.
On June 4, the results for all 543 seats—including the two in Arunachal and the one in Sikkim—will be announced.

Given that the dates of the two state assemblies’ term expiration would have been known to EC even when it completed the original timetable, the schedule modification that occurred one day after the poll dates were announced suggests that the commission may have made an error.
In exercising the authority granted by Article 324 read with Article 172(1) of the Indian Constitution and Section 15 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, ECI is to hold elections for the legislative legislatures of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim prior to the expiration of their mandates. The Legislative Assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim have terms that end on June 2, 2024. This was stated by the poll board when it declared that it would be changing the assembly elections’ counting date in both states.
