Election Commission sends Atishi a notice for her “join BJP or face jail” comment

With reference to Delhi Minister Atishi’s divisive remarks, the Election Commission has moved to suspend her and threatened to reprimand her should she not recant her threat to “join BJP or face jail.” In response to Delhi Minister Atishi’s remarks threatening to arrest individuals until they join the BJP, the Election Commission has handed her a notice. Her remarks, which have sparked uproar and raised questions about election integrity, have been questioned by the Commission.

Contentious assertion
Atishi garnered media attention on April 2 when she said that she and four other prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) officials would be arrested shortly. She said that the BJP had contacted her via middlemen and threatened to have the Enforcement Directorate arrest her if she declined to become a member of the party.

Notices of defamation and counterclaims
After she made her comments, Atishi received a defamation notice from the BJP. Atishi’s assertions were refuted by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, who also accused Atishi of lying and linked AAP members to a fictitious “liquor scam.”

The reaction of AAP
AAP officials have refuted the claims, linking them to political ploys by the BJP. The recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in relation to a money laundering case has exacerbated tensions between the two groups.

Charges of stealing
By luring its lawmakers to leave, the BJP is allegedly trying to topple the Delhi government, according to the AAP. The current political drama intensified when AAP MLA Rituraj Jha said he was given a substantial amount of money to switch allegiance to the BJP.

I am awaiting an explanation
We anxiously anticipate Atishi’s answer to the Election Commission’s notice, which might clarify the substance of her allegations and the underlying political tensions between the AAP and BJP in Delhi.
