Increased state-wide chickenpox mortality prompt specialists to do more research

Chickenpox mortality seem to be increasing; in Kerala, nine deaths were reported in the first three months of 2024, up from only four in 2023.

Approximately 8,586 instances have been documented in the state so far this year. Of the fatalities, three were recorded in Ernakulam and four in Palakkad.

Even though chickenpox is usually seen as an illness with little lethality, the rise in cases is raising concerns. Experts speculate that a number of causes may have contributed to these deaths.

Age and related comorbidities could have contributed to these fatalities. Additionally, people with chickenpox may have worsening symptoms from post-Covid syndrome, which comprises a range of challenges and problems that arise after contracting a coronavirus. In addition, there is a considerable danger of secondary infection if treatment is not received. In order to stop further chickenpox fatalities, it is essential that we look into and resolve these problems, according to public health campaigner Dr. B Ekbal.

The state Directorate of Health Services’ associate director, Dr. Bipin Gopal, emphasized the need of prompt medical attention in averting problems.

Although the diagnosis of chickenpox is rather simple, prompt treatment is essential to avoiding complications and deaths. In contrast to the past, antiviral medications are being offered to treat chickenpox. People who are exhibiting symptoms have to start taking medicine right now,” he said.

Gopal further pointed out that a sizable section of the populace continues to adhere to conventional treatment regimens and dietary guidelines in spite of the availability of contemporary medications.

If left untreated, chickenpox may result in meningitis and pneumonia, which can damage the brain and other important organs.

The varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox, may lead to serious side effects. Therefore, receiving the right care and attention is essential,” Bipin said. According to him, those who already have underlying illnesses like diabetes, weakened immune systems, or other age-related ailments are more susceptible to their problems becoming worse.

Contributing causes may also include changes in vector components and climate change. Changes in vector behavior and variations in the temperature are often correlated with an increase in instances. Since the chickenpox virus spreads via the air, precautions should be made to stop it from spreading, according to Ekbal.

The state has not recorded any community-level outbreaks in spite of the increase in instances. “Precautions must be taken by patients and their families to stop the spread of the illness, even while there isn’t a major epidemic. Gopal said, “Getting enough sleep and isolating oneself may help limit communal transmission.

Ekbal emphasized the need of conducting thorough research to compile de-identified data on comorbidities and age, as well as mortality audits to pinpoint the exact origins of problems.

The presence of comorbidities

8,586 instances have been recorded in the state since the start of 2024.

Three fatalities were recorded in Ernakulam and four in Palakkad.

Meningitis and pneumonia are among the consequences that may arise from untreated chickenpox.

Individuals with weakened immune systems, age-related illnesses, or underlying problems are more susceptible to their ailments becoming worse.
