India expresses worry to the US over pro-Khalistani groups’ actions in Canada

India expressed its grave worries to the United States on Friday on the growing actions of pro-Khalistani groups in Canada.

During the “2+2” foreign and defense ministerial meeting, India voiced its concerns.

During a press conference, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said, “We have made our concerns very very clear.”

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh led the Indian team to the “2+2” ministerial dialogue meetings, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin led the American mission.

“We have fundamental security concerns, as you are all aware of the recent video that has come to light from one of these individuals,” Kwatra said, noting that the US side was cognizant of New Delhi’s worries.

Following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations in September over the June death of Khalistani rebel Hardeep Singh Nijjar in the Canadian town of Surrey, relations between India and Canada were very strained.

Days following Trudeau’s accusations, India demanded that Ottawa reduce its diplomatic representation in the nation to maintain parity and briefly halted the issuing of visas to Canadian nationals.

41 Canadian diplomats and members of their families have already left India.

India has already started offering some visa services again.
