JP and Deshmukh Receive Honors from PM Modi on Their Birth Anniversaries

On the anniversary of his birth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Jayaprakash Narayan, the anti-Emergency movement hero, and said that his selfless devotion would always serve as an example for others.

Known affectionately as JP and a well-known independence fighter, Narayan was hailed by Modi as the father of “total revolution,” a catchphrase he invented to rally the populace against the government of the time, headed by Indira Gandhi, which imposed the Emergency in 1975.

The prime minister said in a Hindi post on X that he had dedicated his whole life to advancing Indian democracy. Narayan became one of the country’s most prominent socialist personalities after being born in Bihar in 1902.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh, Modi also paid respect to him, saying he devoted his life to the development of rural and tribal areas.

Every generation would be inspired by his efforts and dedication, he said. Deshmukh, a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), actively assisted JP in planning demonstrations against the Indira Gandhi administration. He was praised for eventually giving up politics to devote his life to social work.

In 1916, he was born in Maharashtra.
