Kenneth Mitchell, the 49-year-old actor from “Star Trek” and “Captain Marvel”

Following a five-year struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Kenneth Mitchell, best known for his roles in Star Trek: Discovery and as Carol Danvers’ father in Captain Marvel, passed away at the age of 49.


“He’s portrayed an Olympic hopeful, an apocalyptic survivor, an astronaut, a superhero’s dad, and four unique Star Trekkers,” his family said in a statement posted on X and Instagram. However, to people who knew him well, he was described as a hope seeker, daydreamer, dreamer, soccer player, beach walker, bear hugger, landscape designer, garden grower, canoe paddler, happy camper, nature explorer, cat lover, contagious laugher, gift giver, note sender, moviegoer, art maker, music listener, sports connoisseur, meticulous detail oriented, Leaf’s ally, globetrotter, uncle joker, younger brother, Susan’s partner, and above all, a proud father.”

“Ken had a terrible ordeal caused by ALS for five and a half years. The statement went on, “And in typical Ken fashion, he overcame each one with grace and dedication, to living a full and joyful life in every moment.” “He lived by the tenets that life is a gift every day and that no one is ever alone. His existence is a brilliant illustration of how complete life can be when one is filled with love, compassion, humor, community, and inclusiveness.”

The actor who portrayed many Klingon characters in Star Trek: Discovery, including Kol, Tenavik, and Kol-Sha, as well as Aurellio, passed away, and his passing was also lamented by the franchise, according to a statement on the official Star Trek website.

“The entire Star Trek family sends their condolences to Mitchell’s family, friends, loved ones, and fans around the world,” said the statement.

The motor neuron disease ALS is lethal. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, it is characterized by a gradual degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Mr. Mitchell, who was born in Toronto on November 24, 1974, became well-known for his roles as Joseph Danvers in “Captain Marvel” and as the Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik in “Star Trek: Discovery.”

The Instagram statement reads, “Mr. Mitchell has asked that any gifts be directed towards ALS research or in support of his children.” He is survived by his wife Susan May Pratt and their two children.
