Kerala Opposition Leader Files EC Complaint Regarding Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s Violation of the Model Code

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, V. D Satheesan urged the Election Commission to take action against Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor on Thursday, the eve of Kerala’s polling day, for allegedly visiting heads of churches in the southern state to “lure” them into supporting the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections on April 26.

In a letter to the Commission, senior Congressman Satheesan accused Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena of “blatantly violating the model code of conduct” by hosting a gathering of religious leaders in Kerala.

As stated in his complaint, the opposition leader, Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, “visited various church heads in Kerala to lure them into taking a stance in favor of BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” a flagrant violation of the model code of conduct.

Saxena, who is spending two days in Kerala, according to Satheesan, asked to meet with the leaders of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, the Syro Malabar Church, and other organizations.

He said, “According to reports, some church leaders have declined to meet with the Lieutenant Governor.”

Satheesan argued that the governor was prohibited from engaging in any political action since they were a constitutional head of state.

The Delhi Lieutenant Governor, he said, “is a blot on democracy and its founding values,” since he visited different church leaders in Kerala just before the Lok Sabha elections in an attempt to win support for the BJP.

The Congress leader asked the EC to “initiate urgent action” in response to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s alleged flagrant violation of the model code of conduct.
