Kerala: Social activist Daya Bai withdraws from running for the Lok Sabha

Daya Bai, a social activist, has decided not to run in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Daya Bai, who had previously declared her desire to run as an independent from Kasaragod, withdrew from the race citing inclement weather and ongoing road work between Madhya Pradesh, her home state, and Kasaragod.

“I planned to run as an independent from Kasaragod in the next Lok Sabha elections. Unfortunately, I was unable to go to Kasaragod from Madhya Pradesh before April 4, which was the deadline for turning in the nomination papers, because of the unfavorable weather and the continuing road work. Perhaps God has decided that I should abstain from voting,” Daya Bai said.

Daya Bai had said that her election pledges as the candidate would be to develop the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Kasaragod and to provide long-lasting justice to endosulfan sufferers in the district.

Daya Bai made it clear that she did not support any one candidate or belong to any party.

“After learning of my intention to seek the public mandate, leaders of multiple political parties contacted me.” But I told them that I would not be affiliated with any party and that I planned to run on my own,” the activist said.
