Leader of Assam Oppn demands punishment against KAC official for hitting a female police officer

Guwahati, 21 May Debabrata Saikia, the leader of the opposition in the Assam legislature, has called for action against Gokul Barman, the chief executive member of the Kamtapur Autonomous Council (KAC), who is the subject of a scandal after he allegedly assaulted a female police officer.

In a letter sent to the head of the state women’s commission on Tuesday, Saikia said that Barman had used his political influence to abuse a female police constable who was also his romantic interest, even going so far as to sexually abuse her.

The incident on May 10 required the victim to be hospitalized in Dibrugarh; nevertheless, the Congress leader said that Gokul Barman was not being charged.

In order to get the Assam Director General of Police to record his testimony about the attack on the female police constable, Saikia made an application to the State Women’s Commission. In addition, he insisted that Barman immediately forfeit all government advantages and privileges.

The head of the opposition also called for a thorough investigation to gather Gokul Barman’s call detail data. He has also suggested that the whole situation be thoroughly investigated by forensics.

For those who are unaware, Gokul Barman, a married man, was allegedly engaged in a fight with a female police constable stationed in Dibrugarh, with whom he is allegedly having an adulterous affair.

The police officer, who was from Boitamari in the Bongaigaon district, needed to be hospitalized after the event.

Gokul Barman refuted these accusations and said he had nothing to do with the occurrence, but Hiteshwar Barman, the president of the Kamtapur Autonomous Council, insisted on an official investigation.
