Lok Sabha elections 2024: Gunfire near Moirang voting station in Manipur

During Friday morning’s phase 1 Lok Sabha elections, gunfire was heard close to a polling place in Thamanpokpi, in the Moirang district of Manipur. This caused fear in the neighborhood.

A video that has gone viral on the internet shows chaos and yelling followed quickly by many gunshots. Then, when shooting can be heard, people can be seen fleeing the voting place.

Elections for the Lok Sabha seats representing Inner and Outer Manipur were held on Friday under strict security protocols. A police official told PTI that there had also been sporadic reports of disturbance in a few locations.

In the meanwhile, a brawl broke out in the Thongju Assembly constituency, which is part of the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, between residents and unidentified miscreants.

At Luwangsangbam Mamang Leikai, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh cast his ballot and encouraged the populace to use their right to vote in order to preserve the state’s indigenous population and preserve its territorial integrity.

Biren Singh urged the people of Manipur to vote in order to preserve the state’s indigenous population, preserve the state’s integrity, and expedite the establishment of peace.

Over the last year, ethnic violence has erupted in Manipur between the Kuki-Zo tribal minority and the majority Meiteis who reside in the Imphal Valley.
