Madras High Court rejects request to change Covid duty in physicians’ bond term

The Madras High Court said that it is completely unreasonable and undesirable to utilize the selfless service term as a means of evading the bond policy and declined to modify the Covid-duty days of postgraduate medical students during their mandatory service bond period.

“During the COVID epidemic, people from a variety of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other private citizens offered their services to the public in times of need. In the ruling, Justice SM Subramaniam said, “These services are unmatched.”

“Humanity was being tested throughout that time. Numerous folks lost a great deal of money. However, he dismissed the petitions submitted by Drs. A Aarti Bernett and SS Uvajanani, saying, “It is completely unjustifiable and unacceptable to use this period of selfless service as a way out of the bond policy.”

The petitioners filed a request with the court to modify the two-year mandatory service term for Covid from the bond they provided. This adjustment was requested in order to waive the need for admission to postgraduate and superspecialty medical programs. He said that because physicians have signed and accepted the terms and conditions of the bond, they are not entitled to any concession for a further decrease in the mandatory service duration, despite the fact that other petitions have been made asking similar pleas.
