While being transported to Uttar Pradesh on a transit remand, a man detained in connection with the murder of a local journalist managed to get out of police custody by leaping from a train in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, authorities said on Saturday.

Assistant sub-inspector Anni Lal of the Khandwa Government Railway Police (GRP) said that Jamiruddin Qureshi, the fugitive accused, is one of the five individuals who have been charged for their purported role in the May 13 murder of a journalist in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

After the killing, Qureshi hurried away to Mumbai, where he was caught by the Thane police’s crime section, he said.

According to the official, on May 15, two UP police officers were transporting him to Jaunpur on transit remand. They were taking the Gorakhpur Weekly Express.

On May 16, at around 2:40 a.m., the train arrived at Khandwa station. At that point, the accused requested permission to use the restroom, he claimed.

The accused leaped off the train, according to the official, while the two cops were carrying him to the restroom at the coach’s door. He claimed that the accused has been sought out and that the police have filed a report.
