MP Tejasvi Surya of the BJP is accused of posting hateful content on social media

Election Commission authorities said on Friday that BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has been the subject of a formal complaint (FIR) about an alleged hate message on social media.

The action was taken in response to a complaint made by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and poll authority authorities. They claimed that the Bengaluru South MP, who is also the President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, had attacked a minority group and incited animosity between two populations in a post.

On March 19, he also published a similar video on “X” and YouTube, which received one million views, 13 likes, 587 comments, and 5,400 retweets. It also said that he has 1.3 million followers on X, which allows him to influence votes and sabotage communal peace within the communities.

Based on the complaint, a FIR was filed on March 20 at the Halasuru Gate police station under Section 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act. Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code prohibits encouraging enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony.
