NCBC would call the chief secretary of Karnataka on “blanket reservation” for Muslims

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) said that it will be calling the chief secretary of Karnataka on the “blanket reservation” granted to the Muslim community, which entitles them to reservations in state employment and educational institutions.

“All castes/communities of Muslim religion in Karnataka are considered socially and educationally backward classes of citizens and are categorised as Muslim castes separately under Category IIB in the State List of Backward Classes,” Hansraj Ahir, head of the NCBC, stated.

“This classification enables them to receive reservations in educational institution admissions and in appointments to posts and vacancies in the services of the state, as per Articles 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution of India,” he said.

NCBC has taken issue with the idea that the Muslim community as a whole is backward, acknowledging that there are marginalized individuals within it.

Ahir claims that this is the result of the Karnataka government’s reaction being deemed “unsatisfactory.”

In Karnataka, Muslims make up 12.92% of the population, according to the 2011 Census.
