PM’s shocking remarks on Muslims and Congress, and the EC’s silence much more so: CPM

The incendiary jab that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took at the Congress on Sunday during a rally in Banswara, Rajasthan, is turning into a major electoral issue.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Supreme Court are now being urged by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) to take the “strictest action” against him.

The Prime Minister had said that the Congress intended to allocate people’s hard-earned cash and belongings to “those who have more children” and “infiltrators” during the Banswara rally.

CPM sources claim that ‘concerned people of India’ have launched an online petition campaign asking the electoral commission to take action against Modi’s comment, arguing that it violates the model code of conduct (MCC).

Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the CPM, questioned the Commission’s silence on Monday, stating that the PM’s comment was heinous.

“This is disgusting! Even more horrible is the Election Commission’s silence! The Supreme Court’s rulings on hate speech and the Moral Code of Conduct are flagrantly violated by Modi’s divisive remarks. “Deserves the harshest punishment and contempt of court,” he said on the microblogging platform “X.”

In order to support his allegations, Prime Minister Modi used a 2006 comment made by previous Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the minority community’s first claim to Indian resources.

“Muslims have the first right on the country’s assets,” the Congress party has said in the past, according to Modi. In other words, who will get this property? The people with the most children will get it.

Yechury remarked on ‘X’, “I hope the Supreme Court takes suo motu cognisance of this incendiary speech and issues Modi a contempt of court notice followed by the strictest punishment.”

The Election Commission, however, chose not to comment on the situation.

According to the online petition, the PM’s address misrepresents information that is already in the public domain, thus undermining the Election Commission’s efforts to stop fake news and fact-check all kinds of media.

It gravely damages India’s reputation as the ‘Mother of Democracy’ in the world when it uses derogatory rhetoric to specifically target Muslims in order to get votes. Additionally, the petition said that approving such divisive wording that can offend certain tribes goes against the egalitarian principles entrenched in the Indian Constitution and would only damage India’s standing as a “Vishwa Guru” or World Leader in the community of nations.

It also noted that the Election Commission’s integrity and autonomy, which have been protected and defended by a number of excellent officials before you, would only be weakened by its refusal to take action against such hate speech.

Congress will speak with the Election Commission

Not only did Communists and worried individuals accuse PM Modi of spreading misinformation and trying to polarize the nation along religious lines on Monday, but Congress leader KC Venugopal said the same. According to him, the Congress would file a complaint with the EC on “hate speech.”

“Modi’s hate rhetoric shows how afraid he is of the present political climate. After the first round of voting, he is aware that the election is moving in the INDI alliance’s advantage,” Venugopal said in Kerala.
