President Arvind Kejriwal Insulin was given at Tihar Prison

On the advice of AIIMS physicians, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was given insulin therapy on Monday night while incarcerated in Tihar prison due to an abrupt spike in his blood sugar levels. This is the first time that he has received insulin since the Enforcement Directorate arrested him on March 21, 2024.

According to a Tihar official, Kejriwal was prescribed a low dosage of two insulin units on Monday night by AIIMS physicians due to a blood sugar measurement of 217 at about 7 o’clock in the evening. During a video conference on April 20, physicians supervising Tihar made the choice to deliver insulin, with guidance from AIIMS experts.

On its official platform, the Aam Aadmi Party announced this development and attributed it to divine intervention and the efforts of the Delhi community, mentioning Lord Hanuman in particular. This comes after Kejriwal’s court request for daily video chats with his physicians and insulin administration was denied.

Kejriwal sent a letter to the superintendent of the Tihar prison, accusing the authorities of lying about his frequent demands for insulin and ignoring his requirements. In response to questions, Sanjay Beniwal, Director General (Prison) of Tihar Jail, said that it is common practice to manage the health requirements of a large prison population, including diabetes.

He highlighted the procedures in place for handling complaints and keeping an eye on inmate health requirements. The Enforcement Directorate detained Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering probe that was sparked by claims of anomalies in the now-canceled Delhi excise scheme for 2021–2022.
