Punjab: At the border with Shambhu, farmers occupy a railway track and demand the release of three other demonstrators

On Wednesday, farmers seeking the release of three farmers who had been detained by the Haryana Police squatted on a railway track close to the Shambhu Border here under the banners of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political).

Additionally, hundreds of commuters were left stuck on the joyous occasion of Ram Navami due to the protest’s disruption of train operations.

The “rail roko” demonstration, according to farm activist Sarwan Singh Pandher, is being held in opposition to the March arrests of three farmers: Navdeep Singh, Anish Khatkar, and Gurkirat Singh.

He said that the three were involved in a fabricated case and that the farmers would not be freed by the Haryana police until the demonstration was over.

Anish Khatkar has been fasting in prison for the last 28 days in protest of his incarceration, according to Pandher.

The committee tasked with looking into the violence and death of Shubhkaran Singh was to include a Haryana police official, but this was something the farmer leaders opposed.

Shubhkaran Singh was shot and killed on February 21 near the Khanauri border during a demonstration, according to Pandher, who added that the Haryana police’s involvement in the incident was being investigated.

“How can we expect an unbiased investigation when the member of the probe team is a Haryana police officer?” Pandher questioned.

In the meantime, the area around the Shambhu train station was heavily guarded by police.

The farmers who were protesting were also addressed by agricultural leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal.
