Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, will run for Lok Sabha from Amethi

Lok Sabha elections: An Uttar Pradesh Congress official said on Wednesday that Rahul Gandhi would run in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election from Amethi, a seat he has represented many times since 2002.
Following his return from a meeting in Delhi, Congress District President Pradeep Singhal said that Rahul Gandhi would run as the party’s candidate in Amethi. He said that Gandhi’s name would be made public shortly.

Congress bastion: Amethi Since the Congress party’s founding in 1967, Amethi has served as a stronghold in Uttar Pradesh. The national reaction against the emergency caused Sanjay Gandhi, the younger son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to lose his first election to Amethi in 1977.

Subsequently, he was elected in 1980, but sadly, he died in an aircraft accident in 1981. Rajiv Gandhi, his older brother, joined politics after his death and was elected from Amethi in 1981. Prior to his killing, he was re-elected in 1984, 1989, and 1991.

Rajiv Gandhi’s widow, Sonia Gandhi, ran for office in 1999 from Amethi in the late 1990s. She did, however, move her seat to Raebareli in 2004, which had been held by her in-laws Feroze and then Indira Gandhi.

In Amethi, the family’s political bastion, Rahul Gandhi assumed control in 2004 and was re-elected in 2009 and 2014. Gandhi served as Amethi’s parliamentary representative from 2002 until 2019. In the 2019 elections, he lost to Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani, but by a small margin of only 55,000 votes. He now serves as a Wayanad MP for Kerala.

Smriti Irani vs Rahul Gandhi
If Rahul Gandhi is put up against Amethi-born Union Minister and BJP MP Smriti Irani once again, Amethi may be in for another exciting race. Irani beat Rahul in his stronghold in the 2019 general elections, garnering 55,120 votes. However, Rahul Gandhi entered the Lok Sabha after securing the Wayanad seat by electoral victory.

Irani had fallen short against Rahul in the 2014 elections, but over the following five years, she built her popularity locally and gave the Congress a shock with her historic victory.

Given that the two leaders are facing off against one another once again, the Lok Sabha constituency is ready for yet another battle. This year’s general elections are scheduled for April or May.
