Robotics makes it possible to remove breast cancer and reconstruct organs in a single procedure

Robotic surgery is a novel advancement that allows for simultaneous excision of breast cancer and rebuilding of the organs during a single surgical operation.

Robot-Assisted Functional Breast Preservation Surgery, which involves tissue rebuilding, has shown to be an effective treatment for breast cancer patients. According to CK Birla Hospital, which performed the procedure, “the robotic assistance enabled the removal of cancer while simultaneously preserving or reconstructing the breast tissue, including the preservation of the original skin and, when possible, the nipple, resulting in a sensate and natural breast.”

“A few months after giving birth, a 27-year-old lady arrived at the hospital with a breast lump. Her cancer developed to an advanced level as a result of her denial and concealment of symptoms related to changes in the breast during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The patient received targeted medication and neoadjuvant chemotherapy, which allowed for the best possible eradication of any remaining tumor. The patient reacted very well to this systemic treatment. The patient recovered quickly after undergoing RAFBPS without any issues. The hospital said that while she had first feared losing her breasts, RAFBPS had not only maintained them but also given her sensual, functioning breasts that resembled her original ones.

In a another instance, an elderly lady in her late 50s was found to have three tumors, or multifocal, early-stage breast cancer. The anticipated loss of breasts and the accompanying morbidity upset the patient. She had RAFBPS after being determined to be a candidate for urgent surgical surgery.

Through a single lateral mammary incision, robotic arms were used in this surgical operation to remove the malignant tissue while also collecting tissue from the back to rebuild the breast. The lady had a successful operation, recovered well, and is now leading a healthy life.

The hospital’s director of surgical oncology, Dr. Mandeep Singh Malhotra, emphasized that this procedure allows for more accurate visualization and smaller incisions. He explained, “To remove tissue and reconstruct the breast, a robot is used to enter the breast from the armpit, preserving the breast skin as well as the nipple, thus preserving the breast sensation.” Breast feeling is preserved with this technique.

An exclusive process

The hospital celebrated this as one of the first examples in India to use such a novel approach to maintain large breasts and nipple feeling. According to Dr. Mandeep Singh Malhotra, the robot makes this operation easier and more aesthetically pleasing by keeping the original breast skin and nipple, which preserves breast feeling and makes the breast seem and feel like the original breast.
