Service lanes opened at the Singhu border after 34 days

After 34 days, the Delhi Police today opened the service lanes to traffic at the Singhu border on the NH-44, giving commuters some respite. The major flyover near the border is still blocked by cement barriers, however. The farmers’ protest on February 13 led to its barricading.

Approximately fifteen days ago, the Delhi Police opened the service roads’ single lanes in the first phase.

In addition, the Auchandi-Ferozepur border (Sonepat-Delhi) in the Kharkhoda region was opened ten days ago by the Delhi Police.

The primary entrance point to the nation’s capital is the Singhu border on the NH-44, where hundreds of commuters cross each day.

Thousands of people are employed by the several industrial units that are operating in Kundli, Rai, Nathupur, and the surrounding districts.

The Delhi Police had blocked the border with ten to twelve layers of barricading prior to the farmers’ demonstration. To prevent the farmers who were protesting from entering the capital, the police had erected barbed wire, containers, cement walls, and concrete roadblocks along the border.

The farmers were halted by the Haryana Police at the Shambhu border, therefore they were unable to cross to the Singhu border.

The Shambhu border has been progressively opened by the Delhi Police after the situation returned to normal on February 29.

Today, the police took down the barriers and opened both service lanes.

The Kundli Industrial Association’s president, Subhash Gupta, said that commuters, daily wage earners, and industrialists were much relieved by the opening of the service lanes at the Singhu border.

Industrialists from Delhi had moved their operations to Kundli and the surrounding areas of the Sonepat district. Although thousands of individuals are employed in these sectors, the Singhu border closure has caused harassment to them. For efficient traffic flow, the Delhi Police should open the major flyover as soon as possible, he said.
