Tarn Taran Diary: The robbery event highlights issues with older people in addition to being a crime

There was a robbery in Kad Gill village a few days ago. It became a matter of law and order, but it also served as a warning about the steadily rising issues in society. After midnight, eight burglars broke into the home of an elderly couple. A few households lived close to the couple’s huge, purpose-built complex on their agricultural property. The couple’s two sons have left the country with their families.

After holding the couple captive in a room, the thieves examined the home and the almirahs. After an hours-long search, the thieves fled the complex with thousands of dollars in cash, a sizable amount of gold jewelry, priceless cell phones, other expensive items, and the family’s legally owned firearms. The couple’s foreign-born sons provided the funding for the family’s lavish lifestyle, which includes all the newest conveniences. The couple, who are over 70 years old and dealing with age-related physical and mental issues, are afraid after the occurrence. They can no longer get a good night’s sleep since the evenings have become terrifying for them.

The boys reside overseas with their families, so they are unable to return home to their parents right away. According to the police, the eight thieves fled on foot from the scene of the crime, about half a kilometer away, towards the national highway that passes close to the hamlet. The fact that neither the police nor the village watchman saw them is indicative of the weak state of law and order in the region. Numerous other families who live alone in their farm homes, distant from their communities, and whose young ones are overseas, have been concerned after this occurrence since they are easy pickings for thieves. There have been other incidences in the neighborhood as well, so this was not the only one.

In a few cases, the thieves even claimed the lives of the family members. The elderly couple experiences anxiety as soon as the sun sets; this is a common issue among many individuals who live apart from the younger family members who are visiting overseas. It has become challenging for them to get a good night’s sleep.

There is a family in Tharu village that has a distinct social standing and a solid reputation in the social, religious, political, and commercial spheres. An elderly family member named Ranjit Singh Sandhu serves as the president of the Gurdwara Committee in his community.

Along with the family company, he is very interested in social and religious activities. The Primary Health Center’s structure has been refurbished thanks to the family’s earnest efforts and a sizeable donation from the Sandhus. The kids now have access to a sports club that contains weightlifting and other workout equipment, thanks to the family. The playground and town park have greatly benefited from the family’s contributions.

Up to eighty local children flocked to the village playground for physical exercise every morning and evening without a break. The village park is beautiful, with plenty of vegetation. The family has worked hard to refurbish the local Gurdwara’s building. Parminder Singh Sandhu, the nephew of Ranjit Singh Sandhu, is the village sarpanch, while Harjinder Singh Sandhu, the son of Ranjit Singh Sandhu, is a member of the Zila Parishad in Tarn Taran. Ranjit Singh’s nephew, Roopnishan Singh Sandhu, is involved in the family business and NRI Sabha activities. Despite having strong ties to the political community, the family stays out of controversy. (given by Gurbaxpuri)
