The Srinagar-Leh route is still blocked a week later

Sunday was the sixth day that the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, which connects Kashmir with Ladakh, has been closed. Following a period of intense snowfall in the area that caused snow to accumulate along the route, the road was blocked. Last Sunday, the road was shut off. Over five feet of snow had accumulated at Zoji La Pass.

According to officials, snow buildup has obstructed the route at Zoji La Pass. The Kargil-Zanskar Road at Penzila Pass, the Leh-Nobra Road that crosses the Khardungla Pass, and the Leh-Tangtse Road that crosses the Changla Pass were also declared to be clean.

According to a senior Border Roads Organisation (BRO) official, snow removal activities on the Srinagar-Leh route would begin as soon as the weather improves. Another round of precipitation is expected to begin on February 27.

Several sites have seen avalanches, making the attempts to restore the roads more difficult. This year, in spite of the difficulties, the Srinagar-Leh National Highway continued to function over the winter for a considerable amount of time.

Project Vijayak is responsible for similar tasks from the Drass side, while Project Beacon manages maintenance and clearing activities of the Srinagar-Leh National Highway from Sonamarg to Zero Point on Zojila under the BRO.

The weather in Kashmir is still rainy with weak western disturbances, especially in the alpine areas where snowfall is predicted. There will be some snowfall on February 26 and 27, and on February 28 there will be a short period of wintry weather. It is expected that there will be a lot of snow on March 1 and 2, along with thunderstorms, showers, and severe gusts, particularly in the upper elevations.
