Tiruchy: Public body urged to take action against butcher shops that feed stray dogs

In an effort to combat the problem of stray dogs, the municipal corporation recently announced the opening of six new Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers. The action may not have much of an impact, however, since a number of meat markets dispose of their trash carelessly, which feeds the stray dog problem.

After this, the company has been asked to concentrate on identifying the food supply for stray animals. Locals informed TNIE that a lot of meat vendors are discarding their garbage in the inner regions of Woraiyur, Puthur, Gandhi Market, and other places, drawing a lot of stray animals.

They reported that this occurs mostly at night. Most of the time, you can see stray dogs gathered in front of these booths, waiting for the workers who come by to feed them. “The dogs would attack us whenever we passed the area while the strays were eating meat waste.

A citizen named Karthi Duraisamy claimed, “I came across a situation like that earlier this month while walking along Woraiyur Road. The worker at the meat stall was feeding the dogs.” Raja, a local and seller, echoed similar thoughts, saying, “We have nothing against feeding dogs or other animals. However, the way the meat stores are doing it makes it impossible for us to go along the street at night.”

Recently, TNIE discovered that a worker at a meat stand in Puthur, a short distance from the corporation’s K Abhishekapuram zonal office, was feeding rubbish to stray animals. The employee admitted, “I am not the only one feeding the strays,” when questioned.

In the metropolis, a lot of stores engage in it.” Senior corporation officials retorted that meat establishments are not supposed to dispose of their garbage in this way and that the municipal body has been collecting rubbish from them at no cost. An official said, “We will investigate and take action against such shops.”
