Watch the video as the Indian Navy apprehends Somali pirates on the kidnapped MV Ruen

The Indian Navy effectively stopped Somali pirates from using the former commercial ship Ruen to kidnap ships cruising the area in a daring operation to protect maritime security, an Indian Navy spokeswoman said.

It was claimed that the ex-MV Ruen, which Somali pirates had taken over on December 14, 2023, had resurfaced as a pirate ship and was posing a danger to commercial commerce on the high seas. On March 15, an Indian Navy cruiser assaulted the pirate vessel in quick response to the danger.

A statement released by the Indian Navy said that the Ruen fired on the Naval ships after being intercepted, which prompted a reaction from naval authorities.

Under rigorous adherence to international law and conventions regulating maritime security, the Indian Navy counterattacked, using the least amount of force required to destroy the pirate threat and protect commerce channels and seafarers.

“The #IndianNavy intercepts the ex-MV Ruen to foil Somali pirate plans to take over ships traveling through the area. The Navy said in a statement on social media platform X that the ex-MV Ruen, which was taken over by Somali pirates on December 14, 23, was claimed to have set out as a pirate ship with the intention of engaging in acts of #piracy on high seas.

“On March 15, the Indian Navy destroyer intercepted the vessel. The warship, which is acting in accordance with international law, in self-defense and to combat piracy, was fired at by the vessel, using the least amount of force required to eliminate the danger that the pirates pose to ships and seafarers. It said that the pirates on board had been ordered to surrender, free the ship, and release any people they may be detaining against their will.

The Indian Navy has issued a command to the pirates on board to surrender right now and free any civilians they may be detaining against their will. The Indian Navy reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to upholding maritime security and guaranteeing mariners’ safety when they navigate these dangerous regions.

The Indian Navy’s action demonstrates India’s commitment to enforcing international maritime regulations and fighting piracy.
