West Bengal: Citizens of Bhupatinagar assault the car of NIA personnel

In West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, near Bhupatinagar, people ambushed an NIA van on Saturday when the authorities were investigating a bomb blast case from 2022, according to police.

Two people were detained by a group of NIA officers early this morning in relation to the case, and they were returning to Kolkata when the car was attacked, according to the authorities.

“The car was stoned and gheraoed by the locals. One of the NIA’s personnel reportedly sustained injuries as well,” a senior police official said.

In this context, he added, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also filed a police report.

Regarding the event, federal inquiry agency officials could not be reached for comment.

The two detained individuals and the NIA team are at Bhupatinagar, where a sizable number of the central police force has arrived, according to authorities.

On December 3, 2022, an explosion in Bhupatinagar tore apart a kutcha home, killing three people.

Later, the NIA took up the probe.

The event on Saturday also reminded me of what happened on January 5, when ED personnel were assaulted during a raid in the Sandeshkhali region of North 24 Parganas in relation to a ration fraud.
