When the BJP’s protest in Pune became violent over “objectionable” graffiti on Prime Minister Modi, four students were hurt

A fight broke out during a BJP demonstration at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) today over “objectionable” graffiti on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that was discovered painted inside one of the university’s dorms, injuring four left-wing students, according to police.

According to reports, the event happened on Friday afternoon close to the university’s main building, which contains its administrative office.

A demonstration was held at the university on Friday by hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members in reaction to the offensive graffiti on the prime minister that was discovered inside the dormitory. But when four students from a left-wing group showed up at the protest location, the demonstration became violent, according to a police officer.

During the demonstration, he stated, there was a scuffle in which four students from the New Socialist Alternative were hurt.

The official said that these four students were subsequently arrested by the police and released that evening.

At the BJP protest venue, four students from a Left-wing group are seen holding flags belonging to their organization in a video of the event that went viral on social media. These four kids yell “Inquilab Zindabad” in response to BJP campaigners raising the “Bharat Mata ki jai” slogan.

The footage then shows the demonstrators encircling and beating these four pupils.

Police said they discovered anti-PM Modi graffiti inside the hostel on Thursday.

Dheeraj Ghate, head of the BJP’s Pune city unit, said, “The offensive material disparaging our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is completely unacceptable. There are a lot of students wandering about the campus who are not affiliated with SPPU. We urge that those responsible for the offensive graffiti on our PM face severe consequences. The capital of education is Pune. Our university will not be allowed to become a JNU.

A complaint was filed on Friday under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 500 (defamation) against an anonymous individual for allegedly spraying the graffiti, according to a Chaturshringi police station officer.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma, “The prime minister was the target of offensive material painted by an anonymous individual. We’re looking into the situation.
