With intelligence about terror threats, security personnel in J&K are alert

Ahead of the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency’s first phase of elections, security forces and intelligence services are alert because of reports that terrorists may attempt to disturb the calm in the Union Territory in an effort to convey to the outside world that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is not peaceful.

Many reports have reached intelligence agencies suggesting that terrorists may attempt to sow panic during the elections, particularly in the areas of Rajouri and Poonch, which are not part of the Udhampur LS seat. Reports indicate that these twin areas along the LOC are home to more than fifteen skilled ultras. These places have also had a number of terror acts in the recent past, with the perpetrators still at large.

Former Over Ground Workers (OGWs) have also been identified by Army intelligence and police, and a list of them has been provided with sister agencies in several of the unrest-plagued areas of Jammu division. Intelligence services are also keeping an eye on the families of terrorists who are now operating out of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoJK).

A large number of ultras, particularly those from Doda, Kishtwar, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi, migrated to Pakistan many years ago and have been active there ever since. Reliable sources have revealed that OGWs who were once involved in terror groups but subsequently turned themselves in might face action from the security agencies. The action is probably being taken to make sure there was no breach of peace in these areas where authorities have detected indications of a possible terrorist resurgence.

The J&K elections are scheduled to begin in stages on April 19, and in order to ensure the security of every location, the security forces are working nonstop.

Weapons and explosives were found when security authorities raided a terror hideaway in Mahore, Reasi district, on Saturday. To ensure that no weapons or drugs are smuggled, the authorities are also closely monitoring the LoC and International Border (IB). Funds obtained from the sale of drugs sent from Pakistan are used in J&K for terrorist endeavors.
