50% Of Virat Kohli’s match fees were fined for his argument with the umpire after the controversial dismissal

Virat Kohli, the former captain and star batsman of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), was fined 50% of his match money by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for violating the IPL Code of Conduct. The cricket governing body claims that on April 21, 2024, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, during Indian Premier League (IPL) match number 36 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, Virat Kohli violated the code of conduct by arguing with the on-field umpire after he was given out.

“Virat Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct,” the BCCI said in an official statement. He took the match referee’s punishment after acknowledging his wrongdoing. The judgment made by the Match referee is definitive and enforceable for Level 1 violations of the Code of Conduct.”

What happened in this instance?
Opener Virat Kohli played a waist-height full toss by Harshit Rana with a straight bat in the third over of the RCB vs. KKR match’s second inning, but the bowler himself pouched it. Virat Kohli, however, was dissatisfied with the umpire’s out call and immediately challenged the height of the ball.

Afterwards, it was discovered—with the assistance of Hawkeye—that Virat Kohli was not within the crease when Harshit Rana’s waist-height-dipping ball struck the ground. It was observed that Virat Kohli has a waist height of 1.04 meters. If the batter had been standing straight at the popping crease and not beyond the line, the ball would have struck the ground at a height of 0.92 meters.
