Bangladesh was fined for having a slow overrate against England in the ICC World Cup 2023 in Dharamsala

For sustaining a sluggish over-rate against England in a league match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup on Tuesday, 10 October 2023, Bangladesh has been penalised 5% of their match money.

When Shakib Al Hasan’s team was determined to be one over short of the objective after time allowances were taken into account, Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees assessed the sentence.

Players are penalized 5% of their match costs for each over their team fails to bowl in the permitted time, in line with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which addresses minimum over-rate offenses.

No formal hearing was required since Shakib Al Hasan admitted to the crime and agreed to the suggested punishment.

The accusation was made by the on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Paul Wilson, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

Dawid Malan had earlier struck 140 before Reece Topley decimated Bangladesh’s top order on Tuesday, helping England recover from their crushing defeat by New Zealand in their World Cup debut.

After amassing 364-9 at Dharamsala, in-form Malan blasted five sixes for his career-best one-day international total, while Topley claimed 4-43 as the defending champions triumphed by 137 runs.

Due to some disciplined bowling by paceman Shoriful Islam and off-spinner Mahedi Hasan, who took seven wickets between them but finally had enough on the board, England was unable to capitalize on an alarming situation of 296-2 in the 40th over.

Jos Buttler, the captain of England, was pleased with his team’s performance following their nine-wicket loss to the Black Caps.

We stayed true to our principles and played how we wanted to play, but there is always room for improvement, he said.

“We would have wanted to maybe have scored a few more runs at the conclusion of the innings… But the opening combination between Malan and (Jonny) Bairstow was excellent, and Malan and (Joe) Root were as wonderful, he said.
