Beijing has been awarded the right to host the 2027 World Athletics Championships

NEW DELHI: Beijing has been duly selected to serve as the 2027 World Athletics Championships host city. The move comes after Rome withdrew their proposal earlier in the day due to difficulties the Italian athletics organization was having getting government funding.
The World Athletics Championships are being held in Beijing for the second time; the first one was held there in 2015.

President of World Athletics Sebastian Coe congratulated Beijing, noting the city’s winning bid and remembering the exciting exhibition of world athletics at the National Stadium in 2015.
“Congratulations to Beijing on their successful bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2027, 12 years after our athletes lit up the National Stadium for the 15th edition of our global showpiece,” said Sebastian Coe. Moreover, he recognized China’s noteworthy input to the Wanda Diamond League broadcast, mentioning a total viewership of 368.9 million in 2023.

With intentions to hold the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing, China will further bolster its standing in the world of international athletics in the next year. In addition, the nation will host two meetings in April in Xiamen and Shanghai to begin the 2024 Diamond League season.
Asia’s standing in the world athletics calendar will be enhanced by Tokyo’s 2025 hosting of the World Championships. Beijing’s choice to host the 2027 World Athletics Championships is a testament to the city’s ability and dedication to organizing significant international athletic events.
