Despite not matching the requirements, the shooter participates in trials

It seems that the national shooting organization (NRAI), which is engaged in a legal struggle to defend its selection standards in the current trials for the Paris Olympics, has lately loosened the regulations for one marksman, allowing him to compete in spite of receiving fewer than necessary points.

Trap marksman Karan was permitted to participate despite missing the NRAI requirements for shotgun selection trials by two points, while numerous other shooters who achieved the same scores in the National Championships the previous year were not taken into account.

Shooters who achieved a score of 110 in the senior men’s trap at the 66th National Championship were eligible, according to a letter sent by the NRAI in November announcing the trials. Although Karan, an Army marksman, fired 108 shots, the NRAI only accepted his suggestion; twelve other shooters did not get the same exemption. The shooter did not make the national team despite competing in four selection trials and holding the 15th position at the moment.

According to NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia, Karan was given an exemption since he is a “budding” shooter and the Army provided his “recommendation.”

We made an exception for him since he is a promising shooter. He had been making solid shots, and there was just a two-point difference. We included him in the trials for that reason, Bhatia said.

“We can’t just follow the guidelines. He said, “The Army recommended that he be allowed because he shot really well at the National Games.”

Karan had a sixth-place finish at the National Games.

Ironically, the NRAI and certain Olympic hopefuls are embroiled in a legal dispute before the Delhi High Court. The NRAI maintains that only the top five shooters in rifle and pistol would be permitted to participate in the current trials.
