Fourth Test between IND and ENG: Joe Root remains unbeaten at 122 as England 353 and out in the first innings

On the first day of the fourth Test of the five-match series, India defeated England for 353 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday. Joe Root, who was still undefeated at 122, ran out of partners.

With Ollie Robinson, his overnight companion, for 58 wickets, Root and Robinson put on 102 runs together, but Robinson’s departure quickly ended the England innings, as Ravindra Jadeja claimed four wickets.

India, leading 2-1 in the five-test series that ends in Dharamsala, was impressive with the ball with to performances from Ravindra Jadeja (4-67) and Akash Deep (3-83).

Robinson came back from 31 not out in the morning of the second day and flicked Mohammed Siraj for a boundary. India grabbed the second new ball shortly after, but Robinson was not done scoring boundaries. He chopped, drove, and pulled Akash Deep for three more.

With a sweep of Ravindra Jadeja over square leg going for four, Robinson achieved his first Test fifty. Robinson tried a reverse-sweep, but the left-arm spinner got the last laugh as the ball grazed his glove and went through to keeper Dhruv Jurel, who made a superb low grab to end his 102-run partnership with Root.

Shoaib Bashir attempted a reckless slog off Jadeja three balls later, but backward point broke the front edge. Root’s 122 not out was the high point of England’s first innings, with James Anderson being the final man to go after being declared leg before wicket while attempting to sweep Jadeja.
