In honor of Lionel Messi, Argentina will retire the number 10 jersey: Report

Messi, an Argentine who is now enjoying some time off after his season with Inter Miami ended prematurely, has an enduring legacy for both team and nation. But there’s some exciting news about the Argentina national team.

According to reports, the Albicelestes want to honor Messi’s achievements to Argentine football by retiring the recognizable number “10” jersey. Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia reportedly told a local newspaper, “We will not allow anyone else to wear the number 10 after Messi when he retires from the national team,” according to a statement that was published in the Spanish daily Marca. In his honor, this number “10” will be retired for all time. The least we can do for him is this.

Lionel Messi made history by leading his team to victory in the World Cup, fulfilling his long-held ambition to win the trophy. After losing to Germany in the 2014 World Cup finals and to Chile in the Copa America, many questioned if he could take the field and lead the team.

Since Lionel Scaloni took over as manager, the team has improved under his leadership and he has raised his game accordingly. The team has only lost one game in the group stage against Saudi Arabia.

In an effort to honor the late great Diego Armando Maradona, Argentina retired the #10 shirt in 2002. However, due to FIFA’s stringent jersey numbering regulations, which mandate that teams utilize numbers ranging from 1 to 23, someone will eventually have to don the famous uniform.

Messi, who has had an incredible run of form in the last two years, was able to quiet his harshest detractors. His ascent to the top of the pantheon of greats began with his victories in the Copa America, the Finnallissima, and, finally, the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Messi’s last appearance for Argentina came in the World Cup Qualifiers against Brazil when defender Nicolas Otamendi’s goal gave the team a 1-0 victory. In the South American teams’ WC Qualifiers, the team is now leading the standings.

After placing 14th in the Eastern Conference, he was eliminated early from Inter Miami. During his time off, he will be attempting to recoup from his ailments.

The next Copa America may be Messi’s last competition since the great has declared his retirement from the World Cup after the historic victory. After winning the World Cup, he expressed a desire to participate in more matches as a “Champion,” but it’s unclear how long Messi will stay with the Albicelestes.
