Ishan Kishan’s Exclusion from the East Zone Duleep Trophy Team

Ishan Kishan has participated in each series that India has played so far in 2023. The aggressive hitter has played for India in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is from the ODIs against Sri Lanka in January until the World Test Championship final last week against England. The wicketkeeper-batter also represented Mumbai Indians during the full Indian Premier League season in between.

The 24-year-old has been traveling nonstop due to the IPL and a jam-packed foreign schedule. Even the current respite, which occurs between the WTC final and the beginning of the West Indies tour, won’t last very long since the southpaw will go to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) the next week to begin training for the lengthy trip. The trip begins on July 12 with the first Test, and consists of two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is.

Ishan, who is sure to keep his position in the Test team, would not have been able to play in East Zone’s Duleep Trophy match against Central Zone beginning on June 28 in Bengaluru since India’s Test squad is expected to depart for the West Indies between July 1 and 3.

“Ishan has had a full international schedule with no downtime whatsoever. Even the current little break from cricket is just temporary since he will be traveling to NCA to train the following week. He was chosen as a reserve wicketkeeper in the WTC final team, and based on that, he is expected to hold his place in the Test squad for the West Indies series. There was no time frame for him to take part in the Duleep Trophy match, and as there was no time window, the issue of ignoring or showing no interest in the competition was moot.

The insider went on to say that the rumors that have been circulating recently about Ishan’s lack of enthusiasm about playing the longest format are untrue.

Like every young person, he has been practicing nonstop to play in all three forms for India. He is definitely interested in and serious about red ball tournaments, the insider continues.

Ishan has played 16 T20 matches for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and 6 T20 Internationals and 4 ODIs for India since January 2023. After the Border Gavaskar Trophy (February-March), he was a member of the ODI and T20I teams for the home series against Sri Lanka (January), New Zealand (January-February), and Australia (March). The World Test Championship final in England (June) came after the IPL (March to May).

Will KS Bharat play in any way?

KS Bharat, India’s preferred wicketkeeper in the most recent BGT and WTC final, has been selected for the South Zone side for the Duleep Trophy, however their first game is not until July 5 under the direction of Hanuma Vihari. Bharat won’t be able to play in the Duleep Trophy match since he’s most likely to be selected for the Test squad for the West Indies series, for which the team departs in the first week of July.
