Memphis Depay’s game-winning strike against Sevilla secures Atletico Madrid’s spot in the Copa del Rey semifinals

Memphis Depay’s 1-0 victory against Sevilla on Thursday sent Atletico Madrid into the Copa del Rey semifinals.

After coming in as a replacement, the Dutch attacker scored in the dying moments to help Atletico advance to the last four along with Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, and Real Mallorca.

Diego Simeone’s team, playing their resilient guests at the Metropolitano stadium, ground out their victory after Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty kick in the first half.

Pablo Barrios’ late penalty concession gave Atletico a fright, but the referee used VAR to assess the situation and overturn the penalty.

“Sevilla was very solid in defence, so games against them are always hard,” Simeone said to Movistar.

“We feel hopeful and excited about this (win).”

Before kickoff, players held a minute of silence in memory of the three Sevilla supporters who lost their lives in a car accident while route to Madrid earlier in the day.

As a consequence, according to Sevilla coach Quique Sanchez Flores, the match should never have happened.

“I’ve come to my press conference to offer my sympathies to the supporters of Sevilla.” It’s quite terrible that we were playing on a day when we ought to have been keeping watch on the individuals who had attended this game,” he said, declining to answer any questions.

The former captain of Real Madrid, Atletico’s adversary, Sergio Ramos, a defender for Sevilla, entered the game amid jeers and almost quiet them when he missed a free kick.

Sevilla, who are having a terrible time in La Liga, under Sanchez Flores got off to a great start, but Marcao’s careless foul on Nahuel Molina resulted in a penalty.

But Griezmann stumbled as he fired, causing the ball to bounce wildly off target.

Sevilla stayed deep in defense to impede the hosts, who were unable to generate any more obvious opportunities until the very end.

After 66 minutes, Simeone substituted Depay and Angel Correa for Griezmann and strike partner Alvaro Morata to reorganize his offense after a goal was disqualified for offside.

Depay broke the deadlock with a fast strike, albeit it was chalked off for offside.

After 79 minutes, Correa, one of Simeone’s replacements, cut in beautifully from the right and sent the ball into the area for Depay to poke home.

Late in the game, Ramos had a chance to equalize but could only hit the ball over from point-blank range after making a frantic lunge.

Deep into stoppage time, Atletico midfielder Barrios made a frantic dive in on the outside of his own box, perhaps tripping Erik Lamela, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

After being contacted by VAR to examine the event, the official, Jesus Gil Manzano, had second thoughts and cleared Barrios and Atletico.

Barrios may have touched the ball, but replays did not instantly show this. Gil Manzano made this evident, and Sevilla players argued with the referee at full time.

“I would rather not speak if I think I’ll be banned for two or three months,” Marcao, a defender for Sevilla, said.

When Simeone, the Atletico coach, ran into the tunnel, he punched the air with joy.

Goalie Jan Oblak of Rojiblancos said he was certain there was not a penalty.

“I was calm when I saw that (Barrios) got the ball from behind,” Oblak said to Movistar.
