On October 14, PM Modi will open the 141st IOC Session at Mumbai’s Jio World Centre

On October 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at Mumbai’s Jio World Centre. The IOC members convene during this session, which is a significant gathering.

At IOC meetings, significant decisions on the future of the Olympic Games are taken. Almost 40 years have passed since the last time India hosted the IOC session. The 86th IOC session took place in 1983 in New Delhi.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the 141st IOC Session, which is taking place in India, represents the country’s commitment to promoting international collaboration, honoring athletic achievement, and advancing the Olympic principles of friendship, respect, and excellence.

It added that it gives the many stakeholders in sports the chance to communicate and share expertise.

In addition to prominent Indian athletes and representatives from various sports federations, including the Indian Olympic Association, the session will also be attended by Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, and other IOC members, including Nita Ambani.

The top governing body of the Olympic movement is the IOC session. The approval or modification of the Olympic Charter, the election of IOC members and office holders, and the choice of the Olympic host city are among the major issues it debates and makes decisions on.

43 honorary members and 99 voting members make up the current IOC session. Mumbai is slated to host more than 600 of the world’s top athletes as well as media representatives from over 50 sports from over 100 different countries.

At the 139th IOC session in Beijing in February 2022, an Indian team headed by Nita Ambani—the first Indian woman to be elected as an IOC member—made a strong case for Mumbai’s candidacy, which earned 99% of the votes.

The Mumbai session will be a watershed moment for Indian sport and firmly place India on the international sporting map, offering up many prospects in the organization of sporting events, world-class training facilities, fostering talent, and enhancing the lives of millions of Indian athletes. It will also be a big step toward India’s goals of hosting the Olympic Games and the Youth Olympics in the future.
