Four Students Arrested by Uttar Pradesh ATS Supposedly Associated With ISIS’s Aligarh Module

On Saturday, four persons who were reportedly connected to the ISIS Aligarh branch were taken into custody by the Uttar Pradesh Police Anti-Terrorist Squad. Raquib Imam Ansari (29), who studied for a B.Tech and M.Tech at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Naved Siddiqui (23), who studied for a B.Sc. at the same university, Mohammed Noman Gaffar (27), a student pursuing a BA (Hons) at AMU, and Mohammed Nazim (33), who studied for a B.Sc. at AMU, are the accused who were apprehended by ATS.

The four were reportedly involved in terror plots around the state as part of the “SPLINTER group,” which was established by ISIS and Students of Aligarh Muslim University (SAMU). According to Special DG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar, the accused were receiving orders from their ISIS handlers to commit acts of terror inside the state, and they were drawing inspiration from the philosophy of ISIS. “They were gathering information and preparing a strike,” Kumar was cited by the news outlet IANS.

The four detained people’s identities, according to the ATS, came up during interrogation with Arsalan and Tariq, who had been taken into custody earlier on Monday, November 6. Wajihuddin, a second suspect who also has an AMU PhD in public administration, was taken into custody later on Wednesday, November 8. According to a top ATS officer, seven module members have been taken into custody so far.

According to PTI, Additional Director General of Police (ATS) Mohit Aggarwal stated earlier this month that the unit had received information that some individuals who had become radicalized and were influenced by ISIS were engaging in anti-national activities and assembling a jihadi group of like-minded individuals on the orders of their handlers. He had said that they intended to launch a significant strike in Uttar Pradesh.

Waziudin, Maaz bin Tariq, and Abdullah Arsalan were subsequently taken into custody by the police; they were also purportedly connected to ISIS. While questioning the three, information concerning the four accused people who were taken into custody on Friday and Saturday was obtained. Following their presentation in court, the four apprehended accused will face consequences, according to the announcement.
