200 employees in the recruitment division will be let go by Uber

Uber Technologies said on Wednesday that it was eliminating 200 positions in its recruiting department as part of efforts to reduce expenses and maintain a constant staffing level throughout the year.

Less than 1% of Uber’s 32,700-person worldwide workforce will be impacted by the layoffs, which come after 150 workers were let go earlier this year from the company’s freight services section.

The Wall Street Journal, which broke the news earlier in the day, claims that the most recent layoffs affect 35% of Uber’s hiring staff.

Uber reduced its workforce by 17% at the onset of the pandemic in mid-2020, and it has recently made lower reductions than its main competitor Lyft.

Under the leadership of new CEO David Risher, Lyft lay off around 26% of its whole personnel in April and about 700 workers before the end of last year as it fought to safeguard profits while competing with larger competitor Uber for market share.

Following a sequential decline in headcount in the March quarter, Uber said in May that it was on pace to achieve operational income profitability this year and that it was maintaining a flat workforce.
